ABOUT MICHAEL GARRISON, Director of Governmental Affairs
As Director of Governmental Affairs, Michael Garrison works with the BIA Governmental Affairs Team to advocate for pro-homeownership policies throughout Western Riverside County. Michael S. Garrison was born and raised in Paramus, NJ. He graduated from Siena College in 1997 and, after a period working as a civilian and attending graduate school at Northeastern University in Boston, he attended Marine Corps Officer Candidate School in 2000. He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant on Dec 15, 2000 and was assigned to Headquarters Company, 1st Marines, 1st Marine Division.
Since that time, he has deployed to Iraq three times and has held the positions of Commanding Officer, Executive Officer, Operations. Officer and Supply and Logistics Officer. He has served with 1st Marine Infantry Regiment, Foreign Military Advisor Training Group. 1st Marine Logistics Group, 12th Marine Corps Recruiting District and 7th Marine Infantry Regiment. He was promoted to the Rank of Major in 2011 and was assigned to 7th Marines in 29 Palms, CA. There he prepared to deploy again, this time to Afghanistan. However, due to an injury that was sustained during his time in Fallujah, Major Garrison had to undergo back surgery and was unable to deploy. In late 2012, he was assigned to the Wounded Warrior Battalion where it was determined that he was going to be medically retired.
With his medical retirement approaching, Michael began pursuing his passion; government and politics. He completed his second graduate degree and began to apply his leadership, education and management experience as a volunteer with conservative political groups and candidates. (His political experience prior to his military career included serving as Vice-President of the Siena College Republican Club, an internship with New York Governor George Pataki and employment with the New York State Republican Party.) In 2013, he was appointed to the Board of the California Young Republicans Federated and was elected as President of the Riverside County Young Republicans. During the 2014 election season, he was committed to ensuring an enthusiastic Get Out The Vote effort in support of Republican candidates and had taken every opportunity to conduct outreach to 18-40 year olds.
After officially retiring from the Marine Corps in May 2014, Michael began his post-military career as the District Director for Assemblywoman Melissa Melendez, representing California’s 67th District. Shortly thereafter, Michael was elected to serve as the Vice-Chairman of the Republican Party of Riverside County. Michael has a BA in Political Science, was the Distinguished Graduate from Marine Corps Command and Staff College, and has a Master of Public Administration which he earned “With Distinction”.
His personal military awards include the Navy & Marine Corps Commendation Medal (awarded 5 times), the Navy & Marine Corps Achievement Medal and the Combat Action Ribbon. He is married to his wife, Alexandra, and they have two children, Alexa and Aidan.
