California Republican Party Chairman Jim Brulte, a former state legislator who took over the party at a low point two years ago, was overwhelmingly reelected to another term on Sunday.
Brulte assumed control of a party badly in need of rebuilding. In addition to holding no statewide offices and dropping below 30 percent of the state’s registered voters, it squandered a handful of congressional races and was relegated to super-minority status in both the Assembly and the Senate for the first time in over a century.
Last fall, despite dropping all eight statewide races and losing a congressional seat, the GOP won in several key legislative districts to wipe away Democratic supermajorities. Brulte credited the victories to fielding candidates that better reflected their communities.
Brulte, a principal at the public affairs firm California Strategies, also has helped the party turn around its fundraising and is working on several tech projects designed to better target potential voters.
Harmeet Dhillon, a San Francisco attorney, was reelected vice chair.
